Many people have been asking me about my new camera, Nikon D90.
Most of them are already done some research and thinking about buying one.
As much as Nikon D90 is a GREAT camera, I would like to ask you to re-consider before you waste away $900 on a nice camera. (that's without the lens)
I have had Nikon D90 for about 3 weeks, and like I said before, It is an amazing camera.
Picture quality, color rendering, Auto WB performance, huge and clear LCD, and pretty quick AF are all the great things I like about D90.
What I have noticed, though, is that people like D90 because of its unique capability to record 720p HD video. While it might sounds very good to you, average consumers, it's not quite what you think it is.
There are some limitation to this video recording option.
But, let's go through the cool stuff first.
1. 720p HD - it's HD, can't complaint
2. depth of field control - for you to have this kind of option on a regular HD camcorder, it would costs $10,000 or more
3. hybrid - you get a camera AND a camcorder.
Now that we went over all the 'cool' things, let's look at some things you should think about
1. 5 min limit - you cannot record anything longer than 5 min
2. no Auto-Focus - while most of your point and shoot camera can AutoFocus while the video is being recorded, with D90, you must Manually focus while shooting the video.
3. frame shifting - if you move your camera too fast, your image will band (or lag)
4. manual zoom - you gotta zoom yourself
5. mono recording - stereo recording not available
6. costs of lenses - while most of consumer HD camcorder have wide range of zoom, with D90, you have to get different lenses for different range (ex. wide lens for wide shots, telephoto lens for something far away) = $$$$$$
7. quality - even though its 720p, I've seen better quality on a consumer level 720p camcorder that goes for about $1000
so, what do you think? Do you still want to get Nikon D90?

If you want to take great pictures with a very nice camera, GET IT
If you want to record videos of your friends all the time, FORGET IT
